St. John is the higher-priced Lake County name on a lot of Illinois-buyer shortlists. Newer construction and larger homes show up here more than in Highland or Hammond. If Munster feels built out, this is often the next town people tour.
Who lives in St. John, and why they move here
Buyers come for floor plans that are hard to find closer to the state line: bigger kitchens, three-car garages, and subdivisions that went in over the last two decades. US-41 / Wicker Avenue is the commercial spine. Lake Central High School is in town, which is why a lot of families start their search here even if they also look at Dyer and Schererville.
This is not a cheap substitute for the south suburbs. It is a different product. Pull the last 10 comparable sales before you decide the list price is the market.

2026 home prices
Redfin’s May through July 2026 median sale price for St. John was $464,767. That is the highest verified town median in this set, well above Munster ($362,718), Schererville ($350,075), and Crown Point ($336,332), and far above the Northwest Indiana June MLS median of $299,000. New construction and larger homes are a big part of that number. Price the house, not the town slogan.
Commute
St. John sits inland from the Illinois line, with US-41 and a drive to I-80/94. It is a car town. The South Shore Monon Corridor stations are in Munster and Dyer, not in St. John, so rail is a drive-and-park decision. Check current train times if that is part of your plan. We will not invent a downtown Chicago drive time.
Schools
Most of St. John is in the Lake Central School Corporation. Addresses south of 101st Street are generally in Hanover Community School Corporation. Confirm the boundary for the lot you are buying. No invented ratings.
