Cedar Lake has been one of the stronger names Illinois and Lake County buyers mention in the same breath as Crown Point. The lake is the identity. Newer housing and a little more space are the other half. Do not lowball a clean, well-priced house and expect a thank-you.
Who lives in Cedar Lake, and why they move here
Some buyers want a lake lot. More of them want a newer house south of Crown Point without paying a St. John premium. The town is a mix of older lake cottages, rebuilt waterfront, and subdivisions that feel closer to Crown Point than to Hammond. Weekends here are about the water, the parks, and a quieter night than the I-80/94 towns.
If you need a hospital, a big grocery run, or a train, you will leave town. That is fine if you already planned for it. It is a problem if you thought Cedar Lake was a smaller Munster.

2026 home prices
Redfin’s May through July 2026 median sale price for Cedar Lake was $339,330. That is in the same conversation as Crown Point ($336,332) and under Schererville ($350,075) and Munster ($362,718). Waterfront and inland houses are not the same market. Use recent closed sales that match the lot, not the town median alone.
Commute
Cedar Lake is a car commute. I-65 is the usual north-south route via the Crown Point side. I-80/94 is farther north. There is no South Shore station in town. If you need Chicago rail, you are driving to a Munster, Dyer, or Lakeshore Corridor station. Check the current schedule. We will not invent minutes.
Schools
Hanover Community School Corporation serves the majority of Cedar Lake, and some addresses fall into neighboring districts including Crown Point Community School Corporation. Confirm the district for the specific parcel. No invented ratings.
