Dyer, Indiana Homes and Neighborhood Guide

Dyer is the quieter Illinois-border option. Buyers who like Munster or Schererville but want a simpler daily loop often land here. You are still on the state line, still close to US-30 and I-80/94, and now you have a South Shore stop at the Munster/Dyer station.

Who lives in Dyer, and why they move here

Dyer draws Illinois buyers from the Lynwood, Sauk Village, and Chicago Heights side of the line, plus people already in Lake County who want a yard and a little less Ridge Road traffic. The town is a mix of older streets and newer subdivisions. Homes that are priced correctly have not been sitting.

It is a practical town. You come here for the house, the schools, and a commute you already understand, not for a downtown square.

2026 home prices

Redfin’s May through July 2026 median sale price for Dyer was $349,825. That is in the same band as Schererville ($350,075) and a step under Munster ($362,718). The Northwest Indiana June MLS median was $299,000, so Dyer is not the bargain bin. Pull the last few closed sales on the street before you bid.

Commute

US-30 and I-80/94 are the main drives. The South Shore Monon Corridor opened March 31, 2026, and the southern terminal is the Munster/Dyer station near Main Street and Allison Road. Peak service runs toward Chicago. Off-peak riders transfer at Hammond Gateway. Confirm the current timetable. Drive times into the city change with I-80/94, so do not plan around a number you saw in an old listing.

Schools

Most of Dyer is in the Lake Central School Corporation. Parts of the south side, generally south of 101st Avenue, sit in Hanover Community School Corporation. Confirm the district for the specific address. We will not invent a rating.
