Munster, Indiana Homes and Neighborhood Guide

Living there tip: For the full buyer guide (prices, South Shore Monon Corridor, schools, and the week you would actually live), read Moving to Munster, Indiana.

Munster is the Lake County town Illinois-border buyers ask about when they want established streets, not a brand-new subdivision. It sits against the state line near Lansing and Calumet City. People move here for a finished suburban feel, Community Hospital, and a short hop to I-80/94.

Who lives in Munster, and why they move here

A lot of Munster buyers already know the south suburbs. They want Indiana taxes and a house on a tree-lined street they can picture in ten years. The housing stock is older than St. John and more settled than the newer edges of Dyer. That is the point. You are buying into a town that is already built out, with Ridge Road and Calumet Avenue as the daily loop.

Families also look here because the public schools are their own district, not a township split. Confirm the address, then walk the block. Munster rewards people who care about the street, not just the floor plan.

2026 home prices

Redfin’s May through July 2026 median sale price for Munster was $362,718. That sits above Crown Point ($336,332) and Schererville ($350,075) in the same window, and well above the Northwest Indiana June MLS median of $299,000. Price to the last 90 days of comparable sales on the street you want. Do not use last year’s peak.

Commute

Munster sits on I-80/94 and I-94, with Calumet Avenue running north-south toward Hammond and the Illinois line. The South Shore Line’s Monon Corridor opened March 31, 2026, with stations at Munster Ridge and Munster/Dyer. Peak trains run toward Chicago. Off-peak service uses shuttles that connect at Hammond Gateway. Check the current South Shore schedule before you count on a specific train.

Schools

Most addresses in town are in the School Town of Munster. We will not invent a rating. Look up the specific school for the house you are touring, and confirm the boundary before you write an offer.
