Highland sits between Hammond, Griffith, Munster, and Schererville. Convenience is often the deciding factor. You are on I-80/94, close to Indianapolis Boulevard and Cline Avenue, and still inside a town that has its own school district.
Who lives in Highland, and why they move here
Highland buyers are usually payment-first. They want a solid house, a short drive to work or family in the south suburbs, and a town they can learn in a weekend. The housing stock is older and more mid-century than St. John. That is why the price band is different. Under $300,000, this is where competition still feels tight. Get pre-approved before you tour.
People who already work in Hammond, Munster, or along the Borman stay here because the daily loop is simple. If you want new construction and a three-car garage, you will probably also look at St. John or Cedar Lake.
2026 home prices
Redfin’s May through July 2026 median sale price for Highland was $273,063. That is the most attainable verified median in this Lake County set, under the Northwest Indiana June MLS median of $299,000 and well under Munster ($362,718) and Schererville ($350,075). Attainable does not mean easy. Clean, well-priced houses still move. Compare the last few closed sales on the same block.
Commute
I-80/94 cuts across town. Indianapolis Boulevard and Cline Avenue handle a lot of the local drive. Highland is closer to the older South Shore Lakeshore Corridor in Hammond than to the new Monon Corridor stations in Munster and Dyer. If rail is the plan, look at the actual station you would use and the current schedule. No invented drive times.
