If you are moving to Cedar Lake, Indiana, you get a 794-acre lake in southern Lake County and a housing mix that now prices in the same conversation as Crown Point. The tradeoff sits in the same breath. There is no South Shore station in town. The week runs on a car. Waterfront cottages and inland subdivisions are not the same listing. What you keep is a lake town that grew fast and asks you to be honest about the minutes before you fall in love with a sunset photo.
I am a broker at Realest Realty in Crown Point. We are licensed in Indiana and Illinois. We work this south-county loop every week. People already shop Crown Point. Then they drive south, see the water, and ask whether the extra commute is the price of a lake. The useful answer is which version of the week you actually want.
What Cedar Lake actually is
Cedar Lake is a Lake County town, ZIP 46303, built around the lake that named it. The U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts page for Cedar Lake town puts the 2020 Census count at 14,106 people, with a July 1, 2025 estimate of 16,789. That is a 19.0% increase from the 2020 base. It is not a finished inner-ring suburb. It is a growing lake town with older cottages, rebuilt waterfront, and inland subdivisions that feel closer to Crown Point than to Hammond.
The Town of Cedar Lake describes a lakeside community around a 794-acre lake. Public access on the north end sits at the Chamber of Commerce building at Lake Shore Drive and Cline. The Town Complex at Morse Street and Constitution Avenue is 18 acres, including more than 500 feet of lakeshore. Town Hall is at 7408 Constitution Avenue. If you already shop in Crown Point, you are picking a school district, a tax bill, and whether you want the water in the picture.
That is why so many Cedar Lake conversations turn into a Crown Point comparison. If you want the Illinois-to-Indiana math, start with our Illinois to Indiana relocation guide and the street-level Cedar Lake, Indiana homes page. This post is the living guide. Those pages are the process and the town sketch.
The streets that run the week
Lake Shore Drive is the water. Cline Avenue and Morse Street get you to the Town Complex. Constitution Avenue is the civic loop, where SummerFest and the restored Museum at Lassen’s Resort live. Wicker Avenue (U.S. 41) is the commercial spine. 133rd, 141st, and 145th are the inland cuts where newer subdivisions sit. I-65 is the north-south road through the Crown Point side. I-80/94 is farther north.
Drive those at the hour you would actually leave. Do not buy the pin. Buy the route. A Saturday open house on a still lake is a different week than a Tuesday when you need groceries and a train parking lot that is not in this town.
What homes cost in 2026
Use closed sales, not a vibe. Redfin’s Lake County city table for the May through July 2026 window (from the July 2026 Lake County housing market update) put Cedar Lake’s median sale price at $339,330, up 11.6% year over year. That was the strongest gain among the Lake County suburbs with 50 or more sales in that table. There were 90 sales. Median days on market was 28. Months of supply sat at 2.6. About 14.8% of those sales went above list.
Context from the same Redfin tables: Crown Point’s May through July 2026 median sale was $336,332, up 9.6%, with homes moving in 25 days. St. John sat at $464,767. Highland was $273,063 with a 12-day median. Lake County’s typical July sale was $294,137, up 3.9%. Cedar Lake is not the cheap alternative to Crown Point in this window. It is the lake-and-growth alternative at almost the same median, mixing inland new construction with waterfront that can sit well above that number.

Do not mash a town median onto a lake lot. If a listing looks cheap against $339,330, check whether you are looking at an older cottage, a seawall issue, or a taxing district that is not the one you thought. If a listing looks expensive, check whether you are paying for frontage. Price any offer to the last closed sales that match the lot, not the town name.
To see what is actually for sale, start with the live Cedar Lake neighborhood page on Realest.com or the full Realest.com listing search and filter from there. Look at live inventory, then walk the street and the shoreline at the hour you would actually live there.
The commute: I-65 works, the train does not live in town
Cedar Lake is a car commute. I-65 is the usual north-south road via the Crown Point side. I will not invent a downtown Chicago drive time. Drive it at your real leave time. If the job is Naperville, Oak Brook, or the west suburbs, this is a weak fit. If the job is Crown Point, the south county loop, or a hybrid week, the map starts to make sense.
There is no South Shore station in Cedar Lake. The South Shore Line stations map puts the closest useful stops at Munster Ridge (8216 Manor Avenue), Munster/Dyer (10412 Allison Road), and Hammond Gateway (4530 Sheffield Avenue). Those are real stations. They are also a drive. Confirm the current schedule and parking before you treat rail as the commute.

Schools, named only
Most addresses are in Hanover Community School Corporation, with administration at 14525 Wicker Avenue in Cedar Lake. Some parcels fall into Crown Point Community School Corporation. That split is not a footnote. Confirm the district for the specific parcel. If schools are the reason you are moving, verify the boundary on the address, not the city name. A listing remark is not the map.
The lake, the parks, and the week you would actually live
Daily life here is not a courthouse square. It is the water, the Town Complex, and a short hop into Crown Point for errands. The town’s Parks and Recreation department runs the local parks. The public beach is open dawn to dusk, with no lifeguard on duty and a pier with a two-hour dock limit. Walk that beach on a Tuesday night, not just a Saturday open house.
The Cedar Lake Chamber of Commerce sits at the north-end public access and is a useful window into what is actually open. I will not invent a restaurant ranking. Walk Lake Shore Drive. If a walkable square matters, Crown Point feels more like a town center. If you want the water, a newer inland floor plan, and a quieter night than the I-80/94 towns, Cedar Lake is the more honest match.
How Cedar Lake compares to Crown Point, St. John, and Highland
Crown Point is the square and the county seat. The May through July 2026 median there was $336,332, almost the same as Cedar Lake’s $339,330, with homes moving a few days faster. You get a downtown you can walk. You give up the lake in town. Browse Crown Point, Indiana homes and the live Crown Point inventory on Realest.com if that is the week you actually want. Our office is at 112 S. Main St, Suite B, a short walk from that square.
St. John is the higher-priced Lake County name, at $464,767 in the same Redfin window. Newer construction shows up there more than on Cedar Lake’s older waterfront streets. See St. John, Indiana homes if that is the real comparison hiding under a Cedar Lake search. It is not a substitute. It is a different week and a different payment.
Highland is the speed-and-price story closer to Illinois. Redfin’s May through July median was $273,063, with homes moving in 12 days. You get I-80/94. You give up the lake and most of the 2020s floor plans. Read Highland, Indiana homes if your budget is under $300,000 and the Borman is the commute you already know.
Who moving to Cedar Lake fits
Cedar Lake fits if you want the water in the town, you can live without a train at the end of the block, and you are comparing it with Crown Point rather than Munster. It fits buyers who will use I-65. It is a harder fit if you need a walkable downtown, if you commute west every day, or if you thought a lake-town median would buy rebuilt waterfront without paying for frontage.
As of August 13, 2026, Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30-year fixed rate at 6.67%. Budget the payment at today’s rate, with taxes and insurance for the specific parcel. For the wider mid-August read, our 2026 Northwest Indiana and Chicago housing update is the town-by-town table this post sits on.
Cedar Lake frequently asked questions
Does Cedar Lake have a South Shore station?
No. The closest useful South Shore stops for most Cedar Lake households are Munster Ridge, Munster/Dyer, and Hammond Gateway. Confirm parking and the current timetable before you treat rail as the commute.
How does Cedar Lake compare with Crown Point?
In the May through July 2026 Redfin window, the medians were almost the same: $339,330 in Cedar Lake and $336,332 in Crown Point. Crown Point has the square. Cedar Lake has the lake and no train. Run both towns on the same payment worksheet. That is the work we do at Realest. Local write-ups also live on the Realest.com blog.
Are waterfront and inland homes the same market?
No. The town median mixes both. A rebuilt lake lot and an inland 2020s house are not comparable sales. Price from recent closings that match the lot, not the city name.
What schools serve Cedar Lake?
Hanover Community School Corporation serves most of the town. Some parcels are in Crown Point Community School Corporation. Confirm the boundary for the address you are buying. Do not take a listing remark as the map.
Is 2026 a good time to buy in Cedar Lake?
It is a good time if you are pre-approved, you know the payment, and you are shopping the product you actually want, inland versus waterfront. It is a bad time if you are waiting for a crash the mid-year numbers do not show. 2.6 months of supply and an 11.6% median gain are seller-leaning, not 2021 frenzy. Do not lowball a clean, well-priced house and expect a thank-you.
A simple next step
Walk the public beach. Drive Constitution to I-65 at your real leave time. Then look at live inventory on Realest.com instead of saving 40 listings you will never tour. If you want a second town in the same Saturday, add Crown Point, not ten tabs.
