Moving to Orland Park, Illinois: La Grange Road, Three Metra Stops, and the Price You Actually Pay

Golden-hour scenic small-town Americana illustration of a wet main street at sunset, no text overlay

If you are moving to Orland Park, Illinois, you get a finished Cook County village with three Metra SouthWest Service stations, errands on La Grange Road and 159th Street, and a May through July 2026 median sale of $384,807. The tradeoff sits in the same breath. This is a commercial-corridor week, not a Martin Avenue walk. Cook County taxes are part of the payment. The Census mean commute is 33.8 minutes, and that is a town average, not your Tuesday on I-80.

A quick look at Orland Park: La Grange Road, three Metra stops, and the streets at dusk.

I am a broker at Realest Realty in Crown Point. We are licensed in Indiana and Illinois. Orland Park is the Illinois village people name when they want shopping, a finished map, and Metra SouthWest Service, then still open an Indiana tab when the tax bill does not work.

What Orland Park actually is

Orland Park is a southwest suburb in Cook County, ZIP 60462 and 60467. The U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts page for Orland Park village puts the 2020 Census count at 58,703 people, with a July 1, 2025 estimate of 57,954, down 1.3 percent from the 2020 estimates base of 58,708. It is already built. You see it on La Grange Road and 159th.

The Village of Orland Park is the source for permits, parking, and the calendar. Village Hall is at 14700 South Ravinia Avenue. La Grange Road / US-45 is the north-south spine. 159th and 143rd are the east-west cuts. I-80 sits on the south edge. If you already shop 159th and ride the SouthWest Service, you are picking a tax bill, a school line, and a house style, not a new region.

This post is the living guide. The shorter sketch is the Orland Park, Illinois homes page. If the comparison is Indiana, start with the Illinois to Indiana relocation guide and the 2026 Northwest Indiana and Chicago housing update.

Bar chart of May through July 2026 Redfin median sale prices for Lansing, Homewood, Tinley Park, Crown Point, Munster, Orland Park, and Chicago. Orland Park is highlighted.
Redfin city medians, May through July 2026. Orland Park sits above Munster and Crown Point, and well above Homewood, in this set.

What homes cost in 2026

Use closed sales, not a vibe. Redfin’s Cook County city table for the May through July 2026 window (from the July 2026 Cook County housing market update) put Orland Park’s median sale price at $384,807, up 4.0 percent year over year. There were 277 sales in that window. Median days on market was 45. Months of supply sat at 2.2. About 43.3 percent of those sales went above list.

Context from the same Redfin tables: Homewood $249,875. Lansing $214,892. Tinley Park $331,084. Chicago $429,785. On the Indiana side, Munster sat at $362,718 and Crown Point at $336,332. Those are not Orland Park prices. Condos near the commercial corridors pull some streets down. Larger subdivision stock pulls others up. Price any offer to the last closed sales on the same block.

As of August 20, 2026, Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30-year fixed rate at 6.65 percent, down from 6.67 percent the week before and still above the 6.58 percent rate a year earlier. Run taxes and insurance on the specific PIN. Illinois property taxes are not a Facebook average. 2026 is a Cook County reassessment year for the south and west suburbs. The bill on the listing today is not a promise.

To see what is actually for sale, start with the full Realest.com listing search and filter from there. There is no separate Orland Park neighborhood page on Realest yet. Look at live inventory, then walk the street.

The streets that run the week

La Grange Road / US-45 is the commercial spine. 159th Street is the grocery-and-retail loop. 143rd Street is the older cut toward the Metra station and Southwest Highway. Ravinia Avenue is Village Hall. West Avenue runs past Centennial Park. I-80 is the south interstate. I-57 is the east hop. I-294 is a further east hop once you are past I-57. Drive those at the hour you would actually leave. Do not buy the pin. Buy the route.

The commute: three Metra stops, the car still matters

This is the Orland Park difference. There is a train in the village, and there are three of them. All three are Metra SouthWest Service. Fare zone 4 on the 143rd and 153rd pages I checked. 143rd Street sits at 143rd and Southwest Highway, 417 daily spaces. 153rd Street is at 10499 West 153rd Street, 1,364 spaces, the lot with monthly passes. 179th Street is at 179th and Southwest Highway, 319 daily spaces. The village’s commuter parking page puts daily parking at $1.50 and the 153rd monthly pass at $35, sold at Village Hall. Confirm the current timetable. I will not invent a downtown Chicago drive time.

Census QuickFacts lists mean travel time to work at 33.8 minutes (ACS 2020-2024). That is a town average across all modes, not your Tuesday. I-80 and La Grange Road are the car story. If you need the South Shore, that is a drive to Hammond Gateway or the Munster / Dyer stops. If the job is west, drive it at rush hour before you buy. Orland Park is a weak fit for a daily far-west reverse commute.

The tradeoff in one picture. Not a ranking. Drive La Grange Road and confirm the school line before you write an offer.

Schools, named only

Most addresses are in Orland School District 135 for elementary and middle grades. The administration center is at 15100 South 94th Avenue. Some lots sit in Kirby School District 140. High school is Consolidated High School District 230. Carl Sandburg High School is at 13300 South La Grange Road. Confirm the boundary for the lot. I will not invent a rating.

Where I would send you after a showing

This is a short loop, not a directory. After a showing I will actually name four doors. Cooper’s Hawk Winery and Restaurant is at 15690 Harlem Avenue, at 157th and Harlem. That is a sit-down I will send you to. It is also a highway-lot dinner, not a village walk. For schools, start with Orland School District 135 at 15100 South 94th Avenue and Carl Sandburg High School at 13300 South La Grange Road, then confirm the parcel. Some lots are Kirby 140. For a park or a gym, Centennial Park is at 15600 West Avenue, 192 acres. The village Health and Fitness Center is at 15430 West Avenue if you want a rec gym. For an errand, Jewel-Osco is at 9350 West 159th Street, near 94th. The honest catch in the same breath: you are in the car for all of this. Orland Park is density and convenience. It is not Homewood’s Martin Avenue.

How Orland Park compares to Homewood, Flossmoor, Lansing, Munster, and Crown Point

Homewood is the Metra Electric village with a downtown you can walk. Same Cook County table: $249,875 median, 88 sales, 61 days on market. You give up Orland Park retail. Read Moving to Homewood, Illinois if that is the week you actually want.

Flossmoor is the next village over from Homewood, with larger lots and its own Metra Electric stop. I will not invent a Flossmoor median. Redfin’s May through July 2026 city table only publishes towns with 50-plus sales, and Flossmoor was not in that set. Start with Moving to Flossmoor, Illinois.

Lansing is the cheaper Illinois stay on the Indiana line, with no Metra in town. Redfin’s figure there was $214,892. Read Moving to Lansing, Illinois if the payment is the point.

Munster is the first Indiana stop for a lot of Orland Park households that want more house or a different bill. Median $362,718 in that same Lake County window. See Munster, Indiana homes. For the Illinois-border loop, see Living in Schererville, Indiana on Realest.

Crown Point is the town Illinois buyers ask about when they want a square and newer subdivisions. It is not a cheaper Orland Park. Redfin’s May through July 2026 median there was $336,332, and houses move in 25 days. You give up the three Metra stops. Who moving to Orland Park fits

Orland Park fits if you want a finished suburb, you will use Metra SouthWest Service or I-80, and you can live with a commercial corridor as the week. Confirm District 135 or Kirby 140, and District 230, on the lot. It is a harder fit if you need a walkable village downtown, a Homewood payment, or a Cook County tax bill you cannot make work on paper.
