Schererville is a Lake County town, ZIP 46375, organized around two highways. The U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts page for Schererville town puts the 2020 Census count at 29,646 people and the July 1, 2025 estimate at 29,825, a 0.5 percent increase from the 2020 estimates base of 29,669. This town is already built. You see it on Joliet Street, on the interior blocks off 41, and in how often buyers from Munster, Dyer, and the south suburbs put this name on the first Saturday tour.
The Town of Schererville is the source for permits, the calendar, and services. Town Hall is at 10 East Joliet Street. US-41 and US-30 are the commercial spines. Interior streets are quieter. Those are not the same listing. If you already shop Dyer, drive 41, and have family in Munster or St. John, you are picking a house style, a school line, and a payment, not a new region.
What homes cost in 2026
Use closed sales. Redfin’s Lake County city table for the May through July 2026 window (from the July 2026 Lake County housing market update) put Schererville’s median sale price at $350,075, up 0.9 percent year over year. There were 131 sales in that window. Median days on market was 20. Months of supply sat at 1.8. About 26.6 percent of those sales went above list. That is not a fire sale, and it is not a St. John number.
Context from the same Redfin table: St. John $464,767, Munster $362,718, Dyer $349,825, Crown Point $336,332, Highland $273,063. Schererville’s median is almost even with Dyer and a step under Munster. New construction in St. John pulls that town up. Townhomes and older interior stock pull some Schererville streets down. Price the house against solds on the same block, not against the Crossroads slogan.
As of August 20, 2026, Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30-year fixed rate at 6.65 percent, down from 6.67 percent the week before and still above the 6.58 percent rate a year earlier. A $350,000 purchase at that rate is a different monthly number than the same house looked like in 2021. Run taxes and insurance on the specific parcel. Indiana property tax is not a Facebook average.

US-30, US-41, Joliet Street, and the week you would actually live
Daily life here is a car week. Groceries, sports, and dinner run on US-30 and US-41. Joliet Street is the older east-west cut. Town Hall sits at 10 East Joliet. Homan Elementary is at 210 East Joliet Street. Kennedy Avenue is a live construction corridor, expanding from US-30 to Main Street. Drive that if the house you like sits on it. Do not buy the pin. Buy the route.
I will not invent a restaurant ranking. Walk the current doors. Teibel’s Family Restaurant is the long-time name at 1775 U.S. Highway 41, at the 30 and 41 crossroads the town actually uses. Longevity is a quiet signal. It is not a reason to skip inspection on a house two miles south.
This Saturday, August 29, 2026, the town’s Boots & Brews runs 4 to 11 p.m. at Redar Park, 217 Gregory Street. Family hours first, country night later. If you are touring this week, walk the park on a quiet night too. An event lot is not the Tuesday you would actually live.
The commute you actually drive
Census QuickFacts lists mean travel time to work for Schererville workers at 31.3 minutes (ACS 2020-2024). That is a town average, not your Tuesday. US-41 and US-30 are the usual roads. I-80/94 is the Illinois hop once you get north. I-65 is the north-south option once you get east toward Crown Point. I will not invent a downtown Chicago drive time. Drive it at the hour you would actually leave.
There is no South Shore station in Schererville. The Monon Corridor that opened March 31, 2026 sits in Hammond, Munster, and Dyer. Closest stops are Munster Ridge at 8216 Manor Avenue and Munster/Dyer at 10412 Allison Road. Peak trains run toward Chicago. Off-peak is a shuttle to Hammond Gateway. Confirm the current timetable. If the job is a daily west-suburban reverse commute, Schererville is a weak fit.
Parks, the Pennsy, and a Tuesday night test
The Schererville Parks and Recreation department manages more than 260 acres across 28 parks. Redar Park is 9.2 acres at 217 Gregory Street. Rohrman Park is 41 acres on Rohrman Road. The Pennsy Greenway in town runs about 2.1 miles from Wilhelm Street, past Redar, under US-30, and out to Rohrman, with parking at those same spots. Walk a park on a Tuesday night, not just a Saturday open house.
One current note: the town spent mid-August 2026 on storm recovery after the derecho. If you are walking lots now, look at trees, roofs, and fences in person. Do not skip inspection because a listing photo looks fine.
Schools, named only
Most of Schererville is in Lake Central School Corporation. Lake Central High School is at 8400 Wicker Avenue in St. John and serves Dyer, Schererville, and St. John. Grimmer Middle School is in town at 225 West 77th Avenue. Homan Elementary is at 210 East Joliet Street. Confirm the boundary for the lot you are buying. I will not invent a rating. How Schererville compares to Dyer, St. John, Munster, and Crown Point

It is a harder fit if you need a walkable downtown, if you treat 31 minutes as a worst-case instead of a mean, or if the only house you will accept is a 2024 floor plan at a St. John payment.
