Crete sits in Will County on the far south edge of the Chicago suburbs. IL-1, a small downtown, and larger lots than Lansing or Calumet City are the usual reasons people look here. You are farther from I-80/94 and farther from the Indiana line than Lynwood or Dyer. That is the tradeoff, not a surprise.
Who lives in Crete, and why they look at Northwest Indiana
Crete buyers often want space: a yard, a quieter street, and a town that still feels small. Some already work in the south suburbs or along I-394. The housing mix is older in-town streets, acreage, and newer subdivisions that feel closer to University Park or Monee than to River Oaks.
Northwest Indiana enters when the buyer wants a similar amount of house with a different tax bill, or when they also need a shorter hop to Crown Point medical and retail. Cedar Lake and Lowell are the space comparison. Crown Point and St. John are the newer-construction comparison. Crete is not a failed suburb. It is a farther-south, more-land town. Drive it on a weeknight before you write an offer.

Those are not Crete prices.
Commute
IL-1 and I-394 are the usual north-south roads. I-80 is the east-west interstate. Crete is a car town. The closest Metra Electric District station is typically University Park. South Shore service is a longer drive to the Munster / Dyer or Hammond Gateway stations. Confirm the current schedule. No invented minutes.
