Steger is the small town between Chicago Heights and Crete. It straddles the Cook and Will county line. IL-1 and the industrial and rail edges shape the week. It is practical, not a boutique downtown. People who already know this corridor do not need a brochure to find it.
Who lives in Steger, and why they look at Northwest Indiana
Steger buyers are often local already, or they want a payment that still works between Chicago Heights and Crete. The housing stock is older. If you want a 2020s floor plan, you will also tour Crete, Dyer, Crown Point, or St. John. That is a product difference, not a verdict on the town.
The Indiana comparison from here is usually Dyer or Crown Point: a different tax structure and, on a lot of streets, a newer house. Stay in Steger if the block is the one you want and the numbers work. Cross the line if the house you need is not here. Walk it either way.
2026 home prices
We do not have a verified 2026 median sale price for Steger from Redfin, MLS, realtor.com, or Illinois REALTORS that we will publish as a town number. Steger was not on Redfin’s Cook County April through June 2026 city table of places with 50 or more sales. Check current listings and recent closed sales on the street you want. For regional context only, Chicago Heights was $189,897 and Lansing was $202,190 in that Cook County window. Those are not Steger prices. Do not invent one.
Commute
IL-1 and I-394 are the main roads. I-80 is the usual east-west interstate. There is no Metra station in Steger. University Park on the Metra Electric District is the common rail plan. South Shore is a drive to Hammond Gateway or Munster / Dyer. Check the current timetable. We will not invent a downtown Chicago drive time.
Schools
Many addresses are in Steger School District 194 for elementary grades. High school can be Bloom Township High School District 206 or a neighboring district depending on the parcel, because the town sits on a county line. Confirm the district for the house. No invented ratings.
