What Crown Point actually is
Crown Point is a Lake County city, ZIP 46307, organized around a real downtown. The U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts page for Crown Point city puts the 2020 Census count at 33,899 people and the July 1, 2025 estimate at 35,616, a 5.1 percent increase from the 2020 estimates base. That growth is visible on the south and east edges. It is quieter on the older streets that face the Square.
The City of Crown Point is the source for permits, parking, and the calendar. Do not treat a listing remark as the city website. Main Street runs the square. Court Street and Joliet Street feed it. Those are not the same listing as a newer subdivision off I-65. If you already shop St. John and have family in Merrillville or Cedar Lake, you are picking a walk, a school line, and a payment, not a new region.

Use closed sales. Redfin’s Lake County city table for the May through July 2026 window put Crown Point’s median sale price at $336,332, up 9.6 percent year over year. There were 180 sales in that window. Median days on market was 25. Months of supply sat at 2.7. About 21.6 percent of those sales went above list. That is not a fire sale, and it is not a St. John number.
Context from the same Redfin table: St. John $464,767, Munster $362,718, Schererville $350,075, Cedar Lake $339,330. If someone told you Indiana is automatically cheaper than the south suburbs, they were mixing towns. New construction on the edges pulls some Crown Point streets up. Older stock near the Square can sit under the median if condition is honest. Price the house against solds on the same block.
As of August 20, 2026, Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey put the 30-year fixed rate at 6.65 percent, down from 6.67 percent the week before and still above the 6.58 percent rate a year earlier. A $336,000 purchase at that rate is a different monthly number than the same house looked like in 2021. Run taxes and insurance on the specific parcel.

US-231 and Main Street handle the in-town loop. I will not invent a downtown Chicago drive time. Drive it at the hour you would actually leave.
There is no South Shore station in Crown Point. The Monon Corridor stations that opened March 31, 2026 sit in Hammond, Munster, and Dyer. The southern terminal is the Munster/Dyer station near Main Street and Allison Road. Rail is a drive-and-park decision. Confirm the current South Shore Line Monon Corridor timetable and parking. If the job is the south suburbs or a hybrid week in Lake County, the map can work. If the job is a daily west-suburban reverse commute, Crown Point is a weak fit.
South Main, the Square, and the week you would actually live
Daily life splits in two. Near the Square, you can walk. The old Lake County Courthouse still sits in the middle of downtown. The Crown Point Community Library is at 122 North Main Street, a few blocks from our office. Groceries, sports, and the I-65 hop are a car. That is the honest week, not a downtown fantasy.
Bulldog Park is on the city’s own parks list. When you want more land, Lemon Lake County Park is at 6322 West 133rd Avenue. Lake County Parks dedicated it in 1972 as the county’s first park. Today it covers 402 acres, with disc golf, trails, playgrounds, and a sledding hill in winter. Walk a park on a Tuesday night, not just a Saturday open house.
The south and east edges are a different product. Newer floor plans, larger lots, and a drive back to the Square. A house you can walk to Court Street from is a different week than a house that uses I-65 as the front door. If you want lake identity, that is Cedar Lake. If you want US-30 commercial without a square, that is Merrillville. Do not mash those towns into one Indiana answer.
Schools, named only
Most of the city is in Crown Point Community School Corporation. The district says it has 10 schools and serves about 9,000 students from Crown Point, Cedar Lake, and Winfield. Crown Point High School is at 1500 South Main Street. Col. Wheeler Middle School is at 401 West Joliet Street. Confirm the boundary for the lot you are buying. I will not invent a rating. Edges can sit near other Lake County districts. Do not take a listing remark as the map.
How Crown Point compares to St. John, Cedar Lake, Merrillville, and Winfield
St. John is the higher-priced, newer-floor-plan town on US-41. The same Redfin May through July 2026 window put St. John’s median at $464,767. You pay more. You do not get a courthouse square. It is a harder fit if you need a South Shore platform at the end of the block, if you treat 29 minutes as a worst-case instead of a mean, or if the only house you will accept is a 2024 floor plan at a St. John payment.
