Hobart has a real downtown and Lake George. It sits between Merrillville and the Portage / Lake Station side of the county. Buyers who want a brick main street without going all the way to Valparaiso often land here.
Who lives in Hobart, and why they move here
A lot of Hobart buyers already know Lake County. They want a yard, a downtown they can actually use, and a shorter drive to I-65 than the Illinois-border towns. Lake lots and inland ranches are not the same product. Compare the last few closed sales on the street you want, not the list price of the house you just toured.
People also move here from Merrillville, Portage, and the south suburbs when they want a small-city feel that is still inside Lake County. If you need new construction and a three-car garage, you will probably also look at Winfield, St. John, or Crown Point.

For regional context only, the Northwest Indiana June MLS median was $299,000 and Crown Point’s Redfin May through July 2026 median was $336,332. Do not treat either figure as a Hobart number.
Commute
I-65, IN-51, and US-6 handle most of the drive. I-80/94 is a short hop north. There is no South Shore station in Hobart. Closest rail is usually Gary Metro Center, Gary/Miller, or Portage/Ogden Dunes, depending on the address. Pick the station you would actually use and check the current timetable. No invented minutes.
